They are fed stories about the “nice white people” who “thought slavery was wrong” and wanted to “help the enslaved Africans”. They’re not told about the political agendas these seemingly innocent ideals masked; they’re not taught about the 10 million Africans who were stolen from Africa, and the millions who died in horribly inhumane conditions, or threw themselves overboard rather than be enslaved. They aren’t told about why shark migrations follow the paths along the East Coast, how slavers on the ships would feed slaves to the sharks for sport.
They aren’t told about the raping of men, women, and children along the nigh year-long voyage across the Atlantic. They aren’t told about the castration of male slaves because of some inferiority complex of white slave masters who feared Black male slaves would somehow get their hands on their wives and daughters.
They aren’t told about how Africans from the same tribe were forcibly separated to prevent communication, their identities stripped, and branded like cattle to be sold on the auction block like so much merchandise.
They are told about Thomas Jefferson’s Black slave-wife, who was little more than a teenager whom he dallied with. They aren’t told that he was in agreement that a Black person was no person at all, but property, and inferior.
They aren’t told these things in the classroom of any school, and because they aren’t, they can’t possibly believe these things are true, even when history—real history—points out the evidence as clear as dayglow in a black and white film.
